Comparing the Transcending Hero from Pagan Mythology to the Successful Business Man

During the Migration Period in Europe in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, pagan oral story telling was the main way of conveying cultural histories. In the High Middle Ages, these stories were written down by Christian authors and now this is how we know that Attila the Hun was real, as he warred with various Germanic kings and princes. These stories revolved around the narrative of the hero. It was the hero’s desire to reach fame, in other words transcend humanity and the physical existence. If a hero was recorded in stories, his mission had become successful, for fame in many pagan cultures is literally the afterlife. After all, if people are still talking about you 200 years after you’re dead then one could argue that you’re still alive.

Now I’d like to compare this concept of the pagan hero in Celtic and Germanic epics transcending reality by reaching fame to the modern business man. Today, sports players, whom one might consider a business man for his business is playing sports, can reach fame and already many have died and we still remember them as heroes. In other sectors, too, business men like Elon Musk, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates will transcend physical existence to live on in the stories future humans will share.

Now for many business men today the ultimate goal is to get rich or change the world, but I would like to argue that you would benefit greatly by following the early medieval Christian’s advice and focus on the afterlife rather than this physical existence. By planning your legacy carefully you could become like the hero in pagan mythology and transcend our realm by reaching the ultimate goal–the star in the firmament–so that not only can you change the world and get rich while you’re here but you can also do so when you’re gone.

I advise you to reach for the greatest success, not the greater success, by following the examples of heroes like Siegfried and Sigmund to transcend existence. After all, Jesus said don’t seek what the moth can consume, and to me he touched on exactly what I’m relaying here. By seeking what can live on after we’re dead, we can become like the hero.

Vancouver Appliance Repair Man Discovers Secret To Success

Success stories come from a wide range of sources. We hear about everything from lions successfully catching game in the jungles to hobbyists making a fortune from foraging in garage sales. Today I want to talk about perhaps the strangest source you’ll hear all day. This is one of those things that you might want to consider making a life-long goal out of, because it won’t be easy.

In the City of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, a man named Roger who works full time as a refrigeration technician for a local appliance repair company repairing freezers and commercial fridges for warehouses and restaurants has accidentally stumbled on a key to success in the business world. Although Roger deals with broken and malfunctioning major appliances in Vancouver BC, his secret key to success still applies to every other profession almost anywhere in the world.

The secret key is quite complex so bear with me here as I attempt to run it down in simple terms. Before we delve deeper, there are some things you should understand. I’ve prepared a list to make this easier:

  1. This secret key for success won’t work for people not willing to put the hard work and time into the equation.
  2. A bit of aggression, passion and determination is always helpful, while also realizing that staying calm and focused is just as important.
  3. You don’t need to work for an appliance repair company in Vancouver BC to make this work for you.
  4. Being in a capitalist economy with relative freedom is crucial.
  5. Not everyone will be willing to make the necessary sacrifices.

Now I hope you understand these before we begin. Roger certainly did, and that’s why he’s driving around in a limo with pockets full of cash. Of course, he’s usually driving a van full of appliance replacement parts when he’s on the job, but he deserves his champagne lifestyle on weekends.

fruits of success

Before I spill the secret out, you should also probably know a bit more about Roger and why he’s fixing broken appliances in Vancouver BC. Being a refrigerator mechanic is not something most people romanticize about, but Roger had no other options as a young man. He knew that in order to reach his ideal level of success, he would have to work hard no matter what job he took and so he had no problem with becoming an appliance repairman. By the time he reached his 30s, he had grown accustomed to the hustle and grind of waking early to fix as many appliances as he could in a single day. The streets of Vancouver are bustling and busy, so he would wake up at 4 A.M. every weekday to skip traffic and reach the other cities of Richmond, Burnaby, Surrey and West Vancouver BC where a lot of his jobs are located. Being able to wake up this early is exactly the crux of the secret we’re going to share here. I tucked this secret deep into this long paragraph so that only people who really want it can find it. If you’ve read this far, you deserve to know what the secret of the secret is, too.

Waking up before your competition does gives you an edge in life. This is exactly why American soldiers are trained to wake up super early. If they can get up before the enemy does, they have a mega advantage to prepare for action. And just like an appliance repairman in Vancouver BC, things are no different in every profession. But our friend Roger the refrigeration technician and electrician not only does this, he found a better way to do it. Some people talk about napping at lunch as the big secret for waking up super early, but Roger uses a magical spell that he calls “appliance grease.” But don’t worry, this magical spell has nothing to do with real appliance grease, if such a thing even exists. Roger calls his secret appliance grease because he get’s awfully greasy after a long day of repairing, installing and replacing commercial and major appliances and refrigerators in Vancouver BC.

So now what’s Roger’s magical spell for waking up early and beating all the other Vancouver appliance service companies? The spell is a combination of these following things:

  • Hardcore heavy metal music at 4 A.M.
  • 20 push ups and 20 sit ups at 4:10 A.M.
  • Prayer and meditation at 4:20 A.M.
  • And lastly but most importantly, NO COFFEE! Yes, you heard me right. No coffee! Roger believes coffee may give you a temporary boost but in order to not need a nap at lunch time he avoids coffee and drinks hot pure cocoa in the morning. That’s right, 100% cocoa with a bit of honey.

Roger doesn’t know the science of it, but I did a little research and apparently pure cocoa as a hot drink in the morning is way better than coffee for making sure you’re not tired. It may not give you that extra energy kick but it will prevent you from getting overly tired. I’ve been doing this for three days now, although I still wake up at 8 A.M., and I’ve noticed a great change in my day-long energy levels.

Now you might understand why I gave you that list of 5 things before I explained Roger’s secret. Just because you wake up earlier than everyone else and don’t feel tired doesn’t mean you’re going to reach success. You still need to put in the effort to grind your face off all day. The whole point of doing this is so that by the time your competition is having lunch, you’ve already worked a full day’s shift and this effect doubles if you can also manage to keep working until after the sun goes down. Roger get’s two full work days for every average workday, totaling 16 hours of working for a Vancouver appliance repair company every single waking day! This is why Roger drives a limo to the club with his wife on the weekends. Not only does he work twice as much in the week, he gets paid overtime, too. And the best part is he loves it! That’s where the passion is vital. If you don’t love working hard and getting rich, then this kind of hardcore living may not be for you, but with all that said this still is a secret to success and you can’t deny that it works. So give it a try if you dare!

Focus On Your Strengths, Not Your Weaknesses

For any business owner who has already reached their ideal success, this advice will come as old news. But for those of us who haven’t, this could be very valuable. A lot of people starting out in the business world start to notice that their skills lack in certain areas. For example you could be great at writing but suck at cold calling. Now I want to argue that it would be a mistake to spend your time trying to get better at cold calling when you could be using that time to hone your strength in writing. One of the beautiful things about having your own business is that you get to hire people and delegate the tasks that you don’t like doing. This works very well because you free up your time to do what you’re good at and you get even better.

The staff here at TWBBS have a special term for you.

The key term here is specializing. You wan’t to become the top dog at what you do and so you want to focus on specializing in a certain area of your business and letting your workers do all the other stuff. Even your workers should be fit for their tasks by doing what they enjoy and have strengths in. After all, you wouldn’t call a plumber and say “I need my car fixed.” So don’t do that to yourself!

Forget your weaknesses. Don’t waste time trying to make those your strengths. By trial and error you’ll be able to know what you can dominate in, and then set out to dominate in that field.

Good luck!

Lifelong Goals vs. Short-term Goals (What’s Yours?)

A lifelong goal can be compared to a destiny, calling, ambition, purpose or what you’re on this earth to accomplish. A lifelong goal can’t be completed in one’s youth. Unlike a short-term goal, it may take over sixty years to complete your lifelong goal. The reason I mention all this is because every majorly successful business has based its motto and modus operandi around a lifelong goal, and almost every business that fails really failed because they gave up and didn’t have a lifelong goal to begin with. Having a lifelong goal means there’s no possible way you can fail because you never give up. Even in the face of bankruptcy and staff hunger riots, the business with a destiny pushes onward.

So I invite you to reflect on your goals. Do you have a lifelong goal? It isn’t impossible to succeed without one, because after all it’s not too difficult to find a service that people need and provide it. The special thing about businesses with lifelong goals is that their services are often unique in the sense that they may be new to a city or a phenomenon brought about by technology and evolution in general. For example, Steve Job’s lifelong goal couldn’t have existed in the 19th century. Most lifelong goals worth while are in direct relationship to the time they exist in.

If you don’t have a lifelong goal but you feel like you’re on a right track in life despite this, that is very good because some people don’t realize they’re life goal until near the end of life when they can look back and see the main theme behind all that they have accomplished. For example, a mechanic friend of mine dying of cancer realized his life goal had been to teach youth about old muscle cars in an age when engines were quickly becoming replaced by electric motors. During his career he wasn’t able to articulate this but this proves that even if you’re unaware of it, we all have a purpose.

A man like Jesus would not call it petty if your life goal is to put a smile on 300 people’s faces every day working full time at a fast food restaurant. To track the impact a person like this is having in the world is impossible. And you might want to call it a blessing if you aren’t aware of your purpose yet, because many people who know their purpose at a very young age have reported that it’s more like a curse than anything else. I know this feeling all too well. Knowing my calling and having an articulated lifelong goal for me means I am restricted to what I can do in life, and if I try to stray from my path my curse will haunt me right until my dying moments.

But how does a lifelong goal relate to short-term goals?

A short-term goal is something that in large or small way is something you need to do in order to accomplish your lifelong goal. For example, if your lifelong goal is to teach people about history through entertainment, your short-term goal might be to receive a major in history at university. What a short-term goal ISN’T is a chore. People make the mistake of writing “clean dishes” or “get car fixed” in their planner and thinking they have accomplished something. These are merely chores and although you might need your car to go to work, it isn’t crucial to completing your lifelong goal. For example, you can still buss or ride a bike to work. So really think about your goals and separate real ones from mere chores. Chores like doing the laundry and taking out the trash should not give you the same satisfaction that completing real short-term goals like writing a book or a taking dancing classes do.

My advice, as someone who studies small business success, is to spend a good hour writing down your goals and from that point onward remind them to yourself everyday. A life with a purpose may be cursed and restricted, but a life without one is meaningless.

Hard Work Pays: The Story of a Residential Gutter System Expert

Here is an amazing story about how the hard work done by you and your team wishing to start a small business can pay off in ways never imagined. I was greatly inspired by this story after doing an interview over the phone with Si, one of the founders of Gutter Gurus Victoria, a small gutter installation business on Vancouver Island. Get ready for some intense inspiration!

Si was down and out with very little prospects. He was tired of working for others who didn’t care about his longevity and had countless other personal problems. It was daunting at first, but he dreamed of starting his own business. For years he worked to near-minimum wage with this dream in mind, and if it wasn’t for some inspiration he heard listening to Grant Cardone he may never have taken the huge risk of quitting his job and getting an immense line of credit to follow his dream.

His dream was do the one thing he knew best, installing, repairing, cleaning and replacing gutters for commercial and residential clients. The first week of having his business made he nearly lost all hope. He didn’t know how to market and not a single client seemed to need his services. He resorted to old school ways of marketing, knocking on doors, cold calling, etc, and just when he wanted to give up he got his first lead nearly a month later.

This one lead was what really changed his life. He treated this one gutter installation job as if it were the most important thing in the world. He spent his time to work the extra mile and make sure there wasn’t a single flaw. He also gave his client the best deal he could. The client recognized the sacrifices Si was making and was so impressed he referred Si to his friend who needed a full gutter replacement. One job lead to the next and after doing the same process of working the extra mile, this led to yet another job. For the next few years Si picked up work from all around Langford and Greater Victoria doing gutter cleaning and replacement. Not once did he slip, maintaining his top-notch work ethic and perfection. News spread and soon he was able to hire one of the best guttering system teams in British Columbia.

Si described to me how he cried, realizing he had reached a level of success he had never even dreamed of. Now Gutter Gurus Victoria is still growing. I think this story is so amazing and worth sharing on Today’s West Bound Business Success because at one moment Si was down and out, in fear of failure and on the edge of giving up. Then next thing he realized hard work really does pay and he owes his success to no one but himself for going the extra mile. This day, Si deserves every ounce of his success and no one can tell him otherwise.

If perhaps you have a dream of starting a business or perhaps you already did and you’re losing hope, just think of how this story can relate to you. Understand that hard work always pays back and if you’re willing to work the extra mile and do the small things your competitors aren’t doing then you’re bound to succeed. Look at Si’s example and see how a troubled man with a dream can turn into the founder of one of the top gutter companies in his area. I’m so proud of this little business for doing what it did and believe it’s a great example for all of us to follow.

Now before I let you go I want to lay down a list of things we should remember from this story:

  1. If you have a dream, it’s worth taking a big risk to pursue it.
  2. Don’t be afraid to do whatever it is that you’re really good at.
  3. Have a role model, someone that can inspire you with their words, and listen to them often.
  4. When you first start out and have no leads, don’t fret and don’t give up. Keep trying and those leads will come.
  5. When you get your first lead, treat it like it’s the most important thing in the world.
  6. When you start to get more leads, keep treating them just like you did for that very first one. Don’t slip. Don’t slow down.
  7. Don’t be afraid to grow your team to meet demand.
  8. Keep working hard, and it will redound in ways you never dreamed of!

Thank you for reading. I hope this inspired you! Come back soon for more advice, news and motivation for small business success!

Why Immigrants Starting Businesses in Canada Should Choose the West Coast!

If you’re thinking of moving to Canada to start a new business, here is a list of reasons why you should choose the West Coast (British Columbia). First of all I just want to spend time to condone your decision of immigrating here. Don’t fret about all the uninformed losers who say immigration is bad. Most intelligent Canadians know that immigration is very important for our economy. After all, we’re all immigrants here and there’s no reason other than prejudices that we should deny people like you from helping our economy and culture with your presence.

Some of the best small local businesses I know were started by recent immigrants and they’ve found a great spot for success. A lot of the exotic chefs in our top restaurants, too, are immigrants and they bring their cultural recipes with them to boost our taste buds forever with their skills. Even though it may not seem like it depending on who you talk to, you and your business are very welcome here in Canada, especially in BC. Now let me talk about why you should come to the West Coast, not the East Side of Canada.

Perhaps the easiest selling point would be our weather. Compared to the East which gets scorching hot in the summer and snowy cold in the winter, the West Coast stays moderately manageable when it comes to temperature all year round. On average we get a bit more rain, but that’s good for farming, gardening and keeping sidewalks clean. Our winters see snow but not nearly as much as central and eastern Canada. Our summers are perfect.

Another easy selling point is a our nature and wilderness. When you’re not seeing to the success of you’re business, you’ll need other stuff for you and your family to do. Our wildlife parks are spectacular, and compared to the East Side, we have a lot more mountains and hills to climb and go skiing on, which makes the landscape beautiful. The East Side is relatively flat, and coming across hills and mountains isn’t as common as in BC.

Now here is some amazing information that will perhaps be the defining point of choosing us: The fastest growing city in all of Canada is on Vancouver Island–the City of Langford. It’s the best place to open a small business right now as it’s estimated to BOOM in size over coming years. Now is not the time to miss this chance. I’ve visited Langford many years ago when it was rather small. When I went there this year I was blown away by how fast it had grown. The housing is currently a lot cheaper than in Victoria and Vancouver. I highly recommend considering Langford as your destination. With all the new commercial development there, you won’t have a hard time finding a good spot for your business.

Now if you’re still not convinced, here’s the expected list of all the reasons why you should choose to open your business on the West Coast:

  1. Comfortable weather
  2. Beautiful nature
  3. Location of the fastest growing city, Langford
  4. Highly accepting of cultural diversity
  5. Almost everyone is very nice, clean and polite
  6. Lots of room for innovation
  7. Has globally respected universities
  8. Very clean air and lack of pollution
  9. Healthier waters on the Pacific
  10. All religions are respected

I’m sure a similar blog in the East Side of Canada would be able to come up with a list of their own, but don’t listen to them. Come to the West Coast and see the beautiful land that’s turning immigrants into rich men and women. We respect hard working people with creative ideas no matter where they come from. Join us!

loaning money for new business advice

Don’t Hold Back From Starting Your Own Business

Fear of debt is the number one factor stopping should-be entrepreneurs from having the business of their dreams. The truth is, if you come from anything less than a rich family, you’ll almost always need to take risks in order to get your business off the ground. One of those risks involves getting a loan. Coca Cola and nearly all major big names that we know of had to do this. The truth is getting a loan adds to your motivation, as you know the balance of future success lies in making enough profit to not only pay the loan back but flourish in the long run. It’s very rare that a new company of any kind can start without resources to draw on.

Dan Lok, the king of high-ticket sales, was $150,000 in debt before he was able to take off. Don’t believe me? Hear it from the man himself:

“Success without a struggle is what people call luck, and if you have none of that, work for your stuff!” Those are some of my favorite lyrics. Can’t remember where I heard them but they stuck with me because luck is something you can’t control. But you can control how hard you work. And if you really believe in your business idea, if you know it’s services are needed and would help a lot of people, it could bring great meaning and happiness to your life to make it happen!

Learn from the experts. Don’t settle for a job you hate. Take your passion to the next level and do what you need to do to make your dream business a reality!
